Sandvik Coromant has introduced the GC1240 indexable milling grade, a new solution engineered to enhance performance and reliability in stainless steel machining. The development addresses common challenges associated with machining difficult materials, including heat generation, tool wear and edge stability.

At the core of GC1240 is a nano-multilayer PVD coating developed using Sandvik Coromant’s Zertivo process. This advanced coating technology is designed to improve resistance to thermal cracking and abrasive wear—two critical factors that often limit tool life in stainless steel applications. By maintaining a stable cutting edge, the grade ensures consistent machining performance across a wide range of operations.

The coating structure combines layers of TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) and TiSiN (titanium silicon nitride), creating a balance between toughness and wear resistance. This combination enables the tool to withstand high temperatures and mechanical stress while maintaining sharpness and cutting efficiency. As a result, manufacturers can achieve predictable tool life and improved surface finish quality.

GC1240 is versatile in its application, supporting processes from light roughing to finishing. It performs effectively in both wet and dry machining environments, giving manufacturers flexibility in how they approach different production requirements. Notably, the grade enables higher cutting speeds in dry machining compared to wet conditions, which can help reduce reliance on coolant systems. This contributes to lower operational costs, reduced energy consumption and more sustainable manufacturing practices.

The grade is particularly suited for machining austenitic stainless steels, which are known for their toughness and tendency to generate heat during cutting. In addition, GC1240 can be used for machining heat-resistant super alloys and titanium, further extending its applicability across industries such as aerospace, energy and advanced engineering.

Sandvik Coromant has made the GC1240 grade available across multiple CoroMill tool families, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of milling operations and setups. This integration allows manufacturers to adopt the new grade without major changes to their existing tooling systems.

Overall, the introduction of GC1240 reflects the ongoing evolution of cutting tool technology toward higher performance, greater durability and improved sustainability. By combining advanced coating technology with application versatility, Sandvik Coromant provides manufacturers with a solution that enhances productivity while addressing the challenges of machining complex materials.
