SMW Autoblok has expanded its MOTIACT range of mechatronic grippers with the introduction of the MX-L 335 and MX-L 520 long-stroke models, designed specifically for high-load automation applications. These advanced grippers are engineered to support end-of-arm tooling in robotic systems, enabling efficient handling of heavy workpieces across industries such as machining, material handling and assembly.

The MX-L 335 compact long-stroke gripper offers a stroke of 55 mm per jaw and delivers gripping forces ranging from 2.5 kN to 27 kN. Meanwhile, the larger MX-L 520 model provides a stroke of 99 mm per jaw and achieves significantly higher gripping forces between 10 kN and 40 kN. These specifications allow manufacturers to select the most suitable gripping solution based on part size, weight and application requirements, particularly when dealing with larger or heavier components.

Despite their high gripping capabilities, both models feature lightweight aluminium housings, with compact widths of 335 mm and 520 mm respectively. This lightweight construction helps reduce the load on robotic arms, preserving payload capacity and improving overall system efficiency. As a result, manufacturers can handle heavier workpieces without compromising robot performance or cycle times.

The grippers are designed for seamless integration into automated production environments. They can be directly connected to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) via industrial communication protocols such as Profinet and Ethernet/IP. This ensures compatibility with modern automation systems and simplifies implementation within existing production lines.

A key feature of the MOTIACT series is its integrated absolute position sensor, which enables precise control of jaw positioning. This allows the gripper to adapt accurately to different workpiece geometries, improving handling precision and reducing the risk of damage. Additionally, the gripping force can be continuously adjusted, providing flexibility across a wide range of applications—from delicate pick-and-place tasks to heavy-duty component handling.

Safety and reliability are also central to the design. In the event of a power failure, the system maintains both the gripping position and force at a 1:1 ratio. This ensures that components remain securely held, minimizing the risk of dropped parts and enhancing operational safety.

The broader MOTIACT lineup covers a wide range of strokes from 3 mm to 99 mm per jaw and gripping forces from 40 N to 40,000 N, making it suitable for diverse automation requirements. With the addition of the MX-L 335 and MX-L 520 models, SMW Autoblok further strengthens its portfolio, addressing the increasing demand for flexible, high-performance automation solutions.

Overall, these new mechatronic grippers reflect the growing need for intelligent and adaptable automation tools in modern manufacturing. By combining high gripping force, precision control and seamless integration, SMW Autoblok continues to support manufacturers in improving productivity, ensuring safety and handling complex workpieces with greater efficiency.
