Hindustan Zinc Limited leads metals and mining sector with 26.3% women workforce!
Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and one of the top five silver producers globally, has reached a significant milestone in workplace diversity. Women now account for 26.3 percent of the company’s workforce, making Hindustan Zinc the most gender-diverse organization in India’s metals and mining sector—an industry traditionally dominated by male employees.
The company currently employs more than 745 women professionals across various functions. Among them are over 314 women engineers and technical specialists who work in core operational roles. These professionals are actively involved in demanding areas such as underground mining operations, smelting processes, heavy equipment handling, mine rescue operations and night-shift responsibilities.
This level of participation reflects a major shift in traditional mining industry practices. Historically, women were rarely present in operational mining roles due to safety concerns, regulatory restrictions and long-standing cultural barriers. Hindustan Zinc has taken several steps to address these limitations and create a more inclusive work environment.
The company has introduced a number of pioneering initiatives aimed at improving gender diversity. It was among the early adopters of deploying women in underground mines and has established an all-women underground mine rescue team. Hindustan Zinc has also implemented policies that enable women employees to work across night shifts in both mining and smelting operations, further strengthening their participation in technical and leadership roles.
To encourage more women to pursue careers in mining and metallurgy, the company recently launched a 25-day outreach campaign titled “She Knows the Ground She Stands On.” The initiative was designed to inspire young women to explore opportunities within the metals and mining sector.
As part of the campaign, students from leading science and engineering institutions were invited to visit Hindustan Zinc’s operational sites. These visits allowed participants to experience modern mining technologies, interact with industry professionals and gain insights into technical career pathways within the sector. The initiative also highlighted real-life stories of women professionals working in operations, showcasing their achievements and leadership within the company.
Technology plays a crucial role in enabling greater workforce diversity at Hindustan Zinc. The company has implemented advanced Industry 4.0 technologies such as automation, robotics, tele-remote mining systems, drone-based monitoring and real-time data analytics. These technologies enhance operational safety, improve productivity and create more accessible working conditions across mining operations.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized that empowering women is essential for the long-term future of the mining industry. He noted that women within the organization are not only participating in operations but also leading initiatives related to automation, innovation and sustainable metallurgy.
Looking ahead, Hindustan Zinc has set a target of achieving 30 percent workforce diversity by 2030. The company aims to continue expanding opportunities for women across technical, operational and leadership roles while ensuring equal access to professional development and career advancement across its organization.
