New Partnership Between Valeo and MAHLE Sets the Stage for Magnet-Free EV Motors!

Valeo and MAHLE have entered into a strategic partnership to develop a magnet-free electric axle system, poised to make a significant impact on the future of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing. The collaboration brings together Valeo’s expertise in electric motor technology, particularly its Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM), and MAHLE’s advancements in magnet-free rotor systems. The partnership aims to produce a high-performance electric axle with power outputs ranging from 220 kW to 350 kW, incorporating the newly developed inner Brushless Electrical Excitation (iBEE) system.

This joint development agreement combines Valeo’s proficiency in electric motors and power electronics with MAHLE’s Contactless Transmitter (MCT) technology, which enables the magnet-free rotor. Together, the two companies aim to increase efficiency, reduce reliance on rare earth materials, and cut the carbon footprint by over 40% compared to traditional permanent magnet motors. An innovative cooling system will also be integrated, improving the power-to-weight ratio of the new electric axle system.

Prototypes are expected to undergo initial testing by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development. This collaboration aligns with the global push for more sustainable and resource-efficient EV technologies.

Xavier Dupont, CEO of Valeo’s Power Division, highlighted the partnership’s role in driving the automotive industry towards sustainable mobility solutions, while Martin Wellhoeffer, Member of MAHLE’s Group Management Board, emphasized the potential to set new efficiency standards for magnet-free electric axle systems.

With increasing demand for eco-friendly electric mobility, the Valeo and MAHLE partnership is set to play a pivotal role in the next phase of EV innovation, contributing to the industry’s sustainability and efficiency goals.
