Jindal Steel Embarks on India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Initiative in Steel Industry!

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL), in collaboration with Jindal Renewables (JRPL), is spearheading a major green hydrogen project aimed at revolutionizing India’s steel sector. Through a newly signed MOU, JSPL’s Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) units in Angul, Odisha, will integrate green hydrogen into their production process, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing steelmaking.

The first phase will see Jindal Renewables produce up to 4,500 tons of green hydrogen annually, while providing 3GW of renewable energy, drastically reducing JSPL’s reliance on coal-fired power. Set to begin by 2025, this initiative is expected to halve the company’s coal energy usage within two to three years.

As part of the strategy, JSPL will also receive 36,000 tons of oxygen for steelworks operations, further enhancing sustainability. Director of Strategy Sanjay Singh emphasized the project’s potential to set new standards in the Indian steel industry’s environmental footprint.

This ambitious venture reflects JSPL’s commitment to leading the transition towards sustainable steel production, positioning itself at the forefront of India’s green energy movement.
