As we enter the seasonal period, I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude to our customers, followers, viewers, readers and listeners on behalf of the entire MTD team. You have all contributed to making MTD the platform what it is today and I hope you have enjoyed our content through 2021, as much as we have enjoyed creating it. Despite the challenges we have all faced through 2021, the industry forecasts for 2022 are already looking positive – something you can read about in our January issue of the MTD magazine.
Like the Queen’s speech, but without the corgi’s – I like to take this end of year break to reflect on the last 12 months and also inform our audience and customers what we have been up to – and where we are going in the next 12 months.
In general, 2021 has been a good year, one that started as everybody knows with restrictions on movement, people working from home and no one quite knowing what the year was going to hold. In January, I took some pretty evasive action, re-shuffling the pack, streamlining activities and putting the right people in the right places to continue our growth trajectory through 2021. In all, the year has ended with some significant highlights.
In January, Tony Gunn started working for MTDCNC in the USA, the plan was to mirror what we’ve been successful at here in the UK and Europe. Having fewer restrictions in the US meant he got off to a flyer, within 3 weeks we were working with Methods Machine Tools, Matsuura USA, Hainbuch, Kitamura USA and many more – an incredible start to the overseas project.
This then led to the recruitment of our technical presenter Chloe Reeve, employed to support Tony and also present here in the UK. Her experience in engineering was a crucial element to her introduction – apprentice served and having worked on the tools for seven years, she was perfectly placed to become a new lead at MTDCNC. Likewise, Tony’s qualifications are similar – but with more years of experience.
Moving into the Spring, the weather improved and restrictions began to lift. Supporting recruitment in youth, we took on several apprentices including Joe Amos and David Lester, both excited to be involved in every aspect of digital marketing at the company. The clouds of uncertainty were lifting with the restrictions and manufacturing was returning to normal, re-shoring picking up pace and customers around the world clambered to be part of our platform. Our audience began to grow faster than ever, Youtube and Linkedin were now being realised as the way to research new technologies and we were perfectly placed to utilise these platforms.
In the summer our viewers hit an all-time high with 1 million people per month now on our channels. Live events were becoming the way to get messages to market and one to mention later in the year was the FANUC live event. We streamed the event and witnessed almost 10,000 views. The year ended on another high as the US began to emerge as a real winner, playing a huge role in MTD’s growth. We have now founded MTDCNC in India following demand from this fast-growing market.
Starting from January 2022, MTDCNC will service this market and bring content to engineers that choose to view it from machine shops and machinery suppliers from this part of the world. Our new website is a big part of the direction the company is taking. You can select the continent you wish to view content from, therefore if you choose to just view what we do in the UK you can, equally if you’re interested in the US, Europe or Asia you can select those too.
The EMO exhibition was another highlight in 2021. With two live events at Tornos and with FANUC, thousands of manufacturers engaged with our platforms. These two excellent events really set the benchmark for streaming live events and MTD will certainly be delivering more live events through 2022. With some businesses remaining cautious of travel restrictions, particularly overseas plus the health and safety concerns for their staff – the delivery of high-quality online content has never been more important.
With a full team going into 2022 including the introduction of Rowan Easter Robinson, we are sending a clear message to the manufacturing community that MTD is growing and our platforms are continually generating more viewers and engagement. Rowan is a time served engineer and at just 23 years of age, he is one of our finest engineers. As the platform grows, so will our diversity in new technologies and this will place MTD in an even stronger position in the future. To build upon this position, we will announce a new business structure in January and this will be to further assist our growth.
For manufacturers that enjoy the physical printed product, our MTD Magazine has also gone from strength to strength. The bi-monthly frequency with extended shelf life and outstanding and insightful unique content makes our magazine the most attractive proposition for readers and advertisers alike. In 2022, we will be delivering more educational content and insights from around the industry that will better educate and prepare our readers for the challenges of the future.
Our Swarf & Chips format will be changing in 2022 too. Our research indicates that ten-minute tours and ten-minute topics are the way to boost engagement. Delivered 12.30pm every Friday, the audience for these shows is now accelerating and the new format will be the focus of this channel next year. A tour of machine shops interests our audience, and we have to give a huge thank you to specialist steel stockholders Intoco for sponsoring the show.
One of the highlights of 2022 will certainly be the MACH exhibition. At MTD, we have so much to announce around this showcase for the UK industry – but more on MACH and other developments will follow in the new year. For now, the MTDCNC team and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a joyful festive period.
