Lödige Industries Automates Cable Drum Storage for HK Electric, Enhancing Efficiency and Safety!

Lödige Industries, a global leader in logistics systems, has completed the installation of an automated storage and retrieval system at The Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. (HK Electric)’s Electric Tower in Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong. The new system, which features an elevating transfer vehicle (ETV), is designed to manage the storage and handling of heavy cable drums and transformers, offering HK Electric improved efficiency, enhanced safety, and streamlined inventory management.

The automated system maximizes the use of HK Electric’s limited 800 m² storage space and provides 293 storage positions across four levels. This multi-storey solution not only accommodates the growing demand for storage but also ensures that the 5.3-ton cable drums are stored in a damage-free manner. With real-time control and visibility over inventory, the system enhances material handling while reducing manual labor.

HK Electric, a trusted electricity provider since 1890, has maintained a supply rating of over 99.999% since 1997, a world-leading achievement. The company’s commitment to stable and reliable service has driven the need for modern, automated systems to keep up with the evolving demands of the energy industry.

The introduction of this new system aligns with HK Electric’s goals of promoting safety and automation in its operations. Alan So, Head of Commercial Services at HK Electric, highlighted the system’s role in optimizing both storage density and safety, noting the benefits of automated processes in improving productivity.

Lödige Industries’ expertise in handling heavy goods, previously applied in other industries, was instrumental in the successful design and implementation of the system for HK Electric. The company’s Managing Director for Asia-Pacific, Nicholas Tripptree, emphasized that this project demonstrates the adaptability of their solutions to complex material handling challenges across various sectors.

As HK Electric prepares for future expansion, the newly installed system provides a solid foundation for growth and continued innovation in their inventory management and operational processes.
