    Reliable threading for the aero sector

    Aerospace components must strictly adhere to high-quality and precision standards to guarantee the highest level of safety and of course, the reliability of parts. In an industry driven by lightweight and efficiency, most aerospace fasteners have self-sealing and self-locking capabilities and are manufactured from aluminium, steel, titanium and other aerospace lightweight super alloys.

    In stainless steel applications, galling is a common problem and one of the common causes can be related to thread roughness. This often impacts the nut and bolt coupling and occurs more frequently in the case of rough thread flanks. Bolt threads are primarily rolled to demonstrate smoother and stronger thread flanks than nut threads that are machined. The use of worn taps or a tapping process conducted incorrectly will lead to poor internal thread quality, a key factor in causing galling.

The result is the ZELX, a dedicated line of taps for the aerospace industry that overcomes the most common issues, including galling. The ZELX line of taps has been designed for heat resistant alloys and titanium alloys and the range comprises ZELX SS (UN/UNJ threading of stainless steels), ZELX NI (UN/UNJ threading of Ni-based alloys such as A286, Inconel, Hastelloy, Waspaloy), and the ZELX TI for titanium alloys.

The ZELX NI and TI taps are made of premium PM high-speed steel for maximum wear resistance and performance at higher temperatures. The optimum flute design promotes smooth chip evacuation while the surface treatment prevents welding and enhances wear resistance.
