    Four new types of VQ end mills

    Mitsubishi Materials has recently expanded its VQ end mills to include 4 new innovative types. These latest additions have been specifically designed for specialised applications in difficult-to-cut and stainless-steel materials.

    Much of the reliability and performance of the VQ series can be attributed to the AlCrN based coating that improves wear resistance. The heat and oxidation resistance and lower coefficient of friction of the new coating permits this next generation of end mills to maximise performance and help prevent tool wear even under the harshest of cutting conditions. Additionally, the surface of the coating has been given a smoothening treatment that reduces cutting resistance and increases chip discharge capacity. With conventional coatings, the sharpness of the cutting edge can be affected, but with the ZERO-μ Surface, the cutting edge retains its sharp edges whilst protecting the tool during harsh cutting conditions.

    In the new series is the VQHVRB vibration control corner radius end mills for high feed rates and larger depths of cut. The gashed land enables efficient chip disposal that supports increased feed rates and larger depths of cut. Whilst a variable helix in the flute geometry provides vibration control for smooth, stable cutting. This range is available with 1 to 4mm diameters with corner radii from 0.1 to 1mm depending upon the chosen diameter. Alongside this tool is the new VQFDRB duplex radius end mills that extend tool life when machining cobalt chrome alloy. The distinctive geometry provides stable machining with a low radial cutting force and also provides improved notch wear due to the reduced side contact. This tool is offered in 3, 4 and 5mm diameters.

    Also new is the VQ2XLB long neck ball nose tool that has a new cutting edge with an S-shaped geometry that provides improved resistance to chipping that can be caused during deep milling applications. High accuracy of the ball nose also ensures precise and reliable machining and consistent workpiece dimensions from this series that is available in diameters of 1, 1.5, 2 and 3mm with different neck lengths. The final addition to this series is the multi-functional VQ4WB lollipop end mill with a true 280º extended cutting zone and special geometry on the cutting edge and rake face that enables multi-functional machining over a wide range of applications. This makes it Mitsubishi’s tool of choice for machining undercut and complex shapes when using a 5-axis machine.
